In the past I’ve tried to write a full review for almost all of the books that I read. This became difficult as my time shrank but also because some books seemed to only warrant brief thoughts and to stretch them out to a fuller review can be a strained exercise.

In an effort to maintain a good level of book coverage I am going to start a monthly (at least) review column. Initially, the books covered will be from my backlog but once I’m caught up I hope to cover all of the books that I’ve read in the month prior to publication. In general, I’m not a big fan of fairy tales, so I was hesitant to read The Stepsister Scheme by Jim Hines. I liked Hines’ Goblin books quite a bit, so when I had a chance to read The Stepsister Scheme, I had to give it a try. The writing is as engaging as ever. I was drawn in after only a few pages even though idea of reading about “Cinderella” and other fairy tales was…I don’t know, slightly disconcerting? The Stepsister Scheme took those tales, fleshed them out and told what happened after the stories as we know them. It provided depth and personalities for the women behind the original fairy tales.

Night of the Furies is the second book in Angsten’s Night-Sea Trilogy, a series of mythic thrillers as the publisher puts in. Strangely enough the only place where it mentions this is actually the second part of a trilogy is on the back flap of the cover. I must admit I have not met the first part, Dark Gold.  Although there are some references in the book to first part of the trilogy I had no trouble understanding the story. Having read Night of the Furies I have no desire whatsoever to go back and read Dark Gold. I found Night of the Furies to be a poorly written, immature, sexual fantasy.

I read Reynolds’ first novel Revelation Space in July. It’s an interesting book but on some points it leaves something to be desired. Reynolds has written four more books set in the same universe, as well as a number of shorter works. Three of the books should be read in publication order, Revelation Space, Redemption Ark and Absolution Gap. Chasm City and The Prefect are standalones. Since there already was a fine review on Chasm City, the second book in publication order, I decided to skip that for the moment an move on to Redemption Ark.
