Damon’s Weekly Noise - Nov 2 2008

November 2nd, 2008 by Damon | Filed under Column.

Halloween is over and we now move on to getting ready for Thanksgiving.  This year we have actually decided to do thanksgiving day at a restaurant (we will still eat turkey) and then cook a meal on Saturday.  This is what happens when you hate half of your family.  But alas that is for another column.  So how did everyone do at Halloween?

Best Halloween costume that came to the door:  Giant brain with eyeballs sticking out.  It was pretty gross, which means “job accomplished”.  Best costume during my kids school parade was Indiana Jones costume with a real whip.  Um, these kids are 2 to 5, who would let their kid have a real whip at school.  This is why being a lawyer in America is such a profitable profession.  It was a good costume though.

New candy I had this year at Halloween:  I had a Rocky Road Snickers, but it did not really taste that much different then a regular one.  Try again.

Best Television Show of the week:  30 Rock was tops on my list this week.  Tree house of Horrors is on later tonight so it is not going to make this weeks list.  30 Rock is this odd show though, where you would not think that every crazy thing and person would mesh into something worthwhile, and yet it does.  I love Tracy Morgan and Alec Baldwin in this show.  This week had Tracy making a ton of loot from his X- Rated video game that he made with some voice acting help from the rest of the cast at his show.  Alec Baldwin working his way back into the company was also humorous, he sure did start from the bottom.  The fact that Tracy plays his crazy character perfect says something, I just do not know what.  I am glad this show is back, you will probably see it in this column a lot this coming season.

Worst Show of the week:  Usually I love Chuck.  It has spies and geeks, which means it is a double hit.  Normally I can let storyline holes go if it means the rest of the story works, but when you build a story on a hole it just does not work for me.  They have to defeat a video game to get a secret code.  That game is missile command from Atari.  Hey its a ROM chip, we could have used MAME to give us unlimited lives or just beat the game, or pull the code out of the ROM.  Bah, stupid.  Then we have Jeff who was the best at that game oh like 30 years ago, works in Chuck’s store so they are going to use him to beat the game.  Come on too coincidental, I did not like it.  The only good part was that Jeff was not the one to win, and that the secret to beating the game kept in tune with a RUSH song I believe.  Well the scene at Atari was also kind of funny, but it did not pull it out of the worst show hole.  Still an episode that makes me say what the f, come on that is stupid.

70s/80s/90s media that has followed me this week:

Your boy been nice since Thundercats,
Since leather bombers and lumberjacks,

As Jadakiss tells me this week on my ipod, Thundercats has been on my mind.  I keep putting the first season on DVD in my amazon cart and then never buy it.  This may be the year though.  The only problem was that Snarf is such a bitch.

Random media thought of the week:  How do the classic holiday shows hold up from 1966 to about 1996 for 30 years, but these days kids just will not watch them?  Once my kids get a bit older they are going to forced to watch The Great Pumpkin, screw them.

Random Halloween is over thought:  Not as many trick or treaters this year as the last few years, we all thought since it was Friday we would get more.  What seems to have happened though since it was Friday is that kids had parties instead of Trick or Treating.  Also my neighbor made the kids do a trick or they got nothing, on some hard core nonsense.  One of my kids who is shy came away with nothing.   Man, talk about a witch.

Best Cover from review copy of the week:  N/A, it was weird none of the stuff I received this week had a cover that made me sit up and listen.
